2000 Gozzard 44 Mk1 B Interior, Hull #17 “MINNEHAHA” New Price!

MINNEHAHA is a rare Gozzard 44 Mk1 with the B interior. In fact, she was the first and only B interior Mk1 that was built. Adding to the rarity of this particular boat is the fact she has been a Great Lakes (read fresh water!) boat her entire career with only one owner having been sailed on the waters of Lake Michigan, Huron and Superior. A boat that is sailed in these waters, also means she spends 50% of her time out of the water while hauled on the hard during the winter months. All to suggest that she is in unusually good original cosmetic condition having only seen a fraction of the wear and tear that a normal sistership might be subjected to.

MINNEHAHA features a dark blue hull with the limited addition color scheme and Awlwood MA brightwork finish on the teak. The interior has an unmolested natural patina on the beautiful cherry woodwork which creates a lighter colored, yet rich appearance highlighting the exquisite wood working demonstrated throughout the boat.

Concept

The B interior concept was designed to incorporate an Island queen sized berth with on suite head stateroom forward without having to revert to a center cockpit deck which are typically not as sea kindly as an aft cockpit model. With a more traditional dinette amidships opposite a two-place navigation area (with built-in chairs), there is a large L shaped galley to starboard aft and a day located just forward of the standard aft stateroom normally found on all G44s. The dinette table is similar to the A model using the coffee table as the base with the tabletop stored behind a seat back when not in use. It is a refreshingly unusual interior for a Gozzard and one that lead the way forward for many of the Mk2 builds that followed.

Construction and Exterior

The hull is molded from female production tooling. The laminate as with all Gozzard Yachts is a “sandwich” cored construction. The Lloyds-approved end grain Baltek Balsa core increases panel stiffness, strength, impact resistance, and sound/thermal insulation while maintaining an excellent weight to strength ratio.

All penetrations are solid FRP. Most of the weight saved by designing the cored laminate is then re-applied in extra skin thickness on either side of the core, making the laminate schedule, robust in the Gozzard tradition.

Marine-grade Vinyl-ester laminating resins are used in the hull laminate below the waterline. The hull laminate is constructed of knitted double-bias E-glass RM (0-90) and XM (45-45) cloth.

Additional reinforcing is utilized in the bow, trail-board, chain plate, mast step, and transom areas. The core material measures ¾” in thickness. It has a density of 6 pounds per cubic foot. The core is installed using both vacuum bagging and hand-laid techniques. The core runs from the cove stripe to approximately 10” from the centerline. The coring material is eliminated and replaced with a solid glass laminate in the areas of the sheer line, centerline, keel, rudderpost, and thru-hulls. The deck is finished with Cook “Buffback” Off-white gelcoat and is a molded FRP sandwich construction with ½”, ¾” and 1” Baltek Balsa core. In areas where equipment is to be installed, the coring material is eliminated creating a solid laminate. The outer and inner skins are built up to a thickness of approximately 1/4”. The deck flange is solid and built up to ½” in thickness. Extra reinforcing is added to the cleat, mast step, and winch attachment areas as well as high-stress areas and corners.

The hull deck joint is bedded in 3M 5200 and bolted on 6” centers with 5/16” Stainless Steel machine screws with locking (aircraft) nuts.

All main or structural bulkheads are glassed to the hull and later the deck before the interior trim work is installed. While some manufacturers install a grid-like structure with the cabin sole screwed down onto the tops, Gozzard Yachts prefers to use a closed grid structure by combining the floor and the stringer surfaces into assemblies. This not only makes the floor nice and solid underfoot it also compartmentalizes the areas you can not easily access normally. The center section is accessed with removable bilge panels to provide access to tanks and pumps.
